Meeting people: the free groups that meet on a schedule
The hardest thing to find in a new town is not something to do, it is a room that meets again next week. These all repeat, they are all free to join, and none of them require knowing anyone first. Pay for your own food or drink and that is the whole cost.

Suncoast Social is the largest of these by a distance, with more than a thousand members and a calendar that runs well past this month. The Sunday Reset is the one to start with because it happens every week at a set time, so there is no waiting for the right date to come around. Beyond it the group runs beach volleyball, art in the park, and occasional ticketed mixers.
Two of these are reading groups that ask nothing of you socially, which makes them the gentlest entry point on this page. The Silent Reading Supper at Green Zebra is exactly what it sounds like: bring a book, buy dinner, read in company for four hours on the last Sunday of the month. The Quiet Reading Club is the roving version of the same idea, free and monthly, though its venue and date move, so follow the organizer rather than planning around a fixed night.
Two series worth following, with no dates yet
Fresh Fridays is a monthly street party on S. Palm Ave run by the Downtown Improvement District, free and all ages, with a live band, local vendors and a different theme each month. Season 6 was announced in August, but neither the District's page nor the City's listing has posted a date yet; both still show last season. It is worth following now so you catch the announcement.
Business Blend Collective runs a Sarasota networking gathering built around a live interview with a local business owner, with free headshots beforehand. RSVP is required and their home base is Toastique. Their events page does not currently carry an upcoming date, so check before making plans.
Keep one repeatable lane
The markets and the drum circle happen every single weekend, so a free plan is always available even when the dated calendar is thin. Pair one with a walk and the afternoon is finished.
