Longboat Key: The Quiet Island Decoded (Beaches, Parking, and What to Know)
A practical Longboat Key guide: every public beach access with real parking counts, how it compares to Siesta and Lido, sea turtle season rules, biking and kayaking, and where to eat on the bay.
Longboat Key is the barrier island built for a slow day. It runs about 12 miles between the Gulf of Mexico on the west, where all the beaches are, and Sarasota Bay on the east, where the marinas, kayak launches, and bayside restaurants sit. One road, Gulf of Mexico Drive, runs the whole spine. The island is upscale, residential, and deliberately quiet, so the trade for those uncrowded beaches is tighter parking and few amenities. Plan for that and you get the peaceful island Longboat is designed to be.

Longboat Key at a glance
- Beaches: Gulf side (west), free access, open 5 a.m.โ11 p.m., unguarded
- Bay side: marinas, kayak launches, waterfront dining (east)
- One road: Gulf of Mexico Drive (GMD / SR 789), north to Anna Maria, south to St. Armands
- Feel: upscale, residential, low-density, couples and walkers
- Best move: arrive before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. for parking
Where to park: every public beach access
Longboat spreads its parking across about a dozen small, blue-signed lots, and that scattering keeps the sand uncrowded. Every lot is free. Weekend and high-season lots fill early, so treat this table as your arrival plan:

|---|---|---|
| 2825 Gulf of Mexico Dr | ~40 | Park at Town Hall, 501 Bay Isles Rd |
| 3175 GMD (Mayfield St) | ~19 | On-site lot |

Beer Can Island: the wild north tip
At the northernmost point, Beer Can Island (Greer Island) is an undeveloped spit of driftwood, shelling, and a boat-and-sandbar scene. The easy way in is by boat, anchoring on the shallow sandbar. By land, park at Coquina Beach on the Anna Maria side and walk across the Longboat Pass bridge, since the north-end street parking opens and closes with the seasons. Pack in and pack out, since there are services out here beyond the sand and the shade of the trees.

Sea turtle season, May to October
Longboat's Gulf beaches are a loggerhead nursery from May 1 through October 31. Longboat Key Turtle Watch marks each nest with painted stakes, and the Town enforces the rules that keep hatchlings alive:
- Lights out or turtle-friendly along the beachfront from sundown to sunup; shield interior lights with blinds
- Leave flashlights off on the beach at night
- Clear the beach nightly: take chairs, umbrellas, and tents with you and fill in any holes so hatchlings have a clear path
- Give nests and turtles room: watch from a distance, skip the flash photos
Longboat Key Turtle Watch runs guided Saturday walks in season if you want to learn the beach up close.

Beyond the sand: biking, kayaking, and shelling
The Gulf of Mexico Drive bike lane runs the full length of the island, flat and coastal, passing beach accesses and restaurants for 10-plus miles. Bayfront Park (4001 GMD) launches kayaks onto the calm bay and adds a playground, dog park, and pickleball. For shelling, work the north end at low tide.

Where to eat, and what's nearby
Longboat leans bayfront and Old Florida for dining. Mar Vista Dockside serves under old trees on the north bayside, Dry Dock Waterfront Grill has been the grouper-sandwich institution since 1989, and Chart House and Shore cover upscale bay and Gulf views. Head south and you reach St. Armands Circle and Lido Beach; head north for Coquina and Anna Maria.

One last check before you commit to a swim day: Gulf red tide comes and goes with the wind and currents, so scan the FWC status map and our Sarasota beach conditions page first. In February and March high season, budget an extra 20 to 30 minutes for the St. Armands approach.
Frequently asked questions
Is Longboat Key beach free?
Yes. Public beach access and parking are free, and beaches are open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The beaches are unguarded, so swim at your own risk and keep an eye on kids.
Where do you park on Longboat Key?
At about a dozen small blue-signed public access lots along Gulf of Mexico Drive, roughly 15 to 40 spaces each. They fill early, so arrive before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Restrooms are at Bayfront Park and Joan M. Durante Park.
Longboat Key or Siesta Key?
Choose Longboat for a quiet, upscale, low-crowd day and better shelling. Choose Siesta for its famous cool quartz sand, easier amenities, and a livelier scene.
Can you drive to Beer Can Island?
Most people arrive by boat and anchor at the sandbar. By land, park at Coquina Beach and walk over the Longboat Pass bridge, since north-end street parking is often closed.
What are the turtle rules on Longboat Key?
From May 1 to October 31: keep beachfront lights off or turtle-friendly at night, leave flashlights off on the beach, and remove all chairs, umbrellas, and tents nightly while filling in any holes.
